The latest information and updates from Alltech Mycotoxin Management.
Welcome to our second Farmfeed of 2022!
Since our last update, the team have been busy both planning and attending events, including the World Mycotoxin Forum, the Alltech Feed Mill Workshop and, of course, the Alltech ONE Conference in Kentucky. Read some of the highlights and key discussion points from the events below.
In addition to these events, we have been publishing new content, sharing media articles, and getting ready for the busy harvest season ahead. If you have not had a chance to see some of our latest updates or read some of our media articles, we have compiled our most recent activities for you to enjoy. Thank you for reading, and we welcome any feedback, queries or comments you may have.
Recent events: ONE Conference, World Mycotoxin Forum & Feed Mill Workshop
At the ONE conference, the Mycotoxin Management team hosted a ONE workshop, discussing the topic: A world without mycotoxins: Can we work together to make this a reality?
This workshop brought together eight industry experts who discussed how the agricultural industry could work together to produce the highest quality animal feed, and the safest and most sustainable food for the end consumer.
There are many opportunities to work together across the supply chain to address the growing challenge of mycotoxin contamination, as we continue to play a significant role in producing both feed and food.
The 2022 Alltech Feed Mill Workshop brought together like-minded individuals from all over the world for two days of learning, with a host of inspiring speakers.
This year's workshop took place virtually once again, and it was great to see so many attendees join us to expand their knowledge.
We had a fantastic agenda across the two days, which included feed safety and biosecurity, feed mill design, and new technologies, as well as sustainability, an increasingly important issue for the industry, globally.
We were proud to present an exciting line up of speakers, including the first appearance of representatives from the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA).
Those who weren't able to attend the live session can still watch the recordings using the buttons below:
This year, at the 13th conference of the World Mycotoxin Forum, Alltech were proud Silver Sponsors.
The World Mycotoxin Forum offers an event programme covering the latest issues in mycotoxin management and is targeted at everyone working in the mycotoxin space - researchers, food and feed industry, laboratories, policy makers, and enforcement agencies from around the world.
As a Young Scientist Pitch Award winner Vivi Koletsi gave a presentation at the Young Scientist Forum titled "Mycotoxins in aquaculture: Occurrence in feed ingredients and feed: Effects on fish productivity and health."
Some key themes that emerged were: climate change, sustainability, soil health and the circular economy. Emerging mycotoxins also seemed to be consistently mentioned in terms of Beauvericin, Enniatins, and Alternaria toxins.
The forum was a fantastic event, where Alltech presented novel research about mycotoxins, generated considerable interest and many good conversations.
Harvest 2022: Time to think about analysing your grains and forages
The small grain harvest is now underway in most parts of Europe and the US, with many forage crops already harvested and ensiled across each of these regions. Now is the time to be thinking of assessing the mycotoxin risk in these crops and making plans to get your samples analysed. Although it is still too early to say with certainty, the persistent heatwave conditions across Europe are likely to create some favorable conditions for mold and mycotoxin development. In the US, wet weather led to delayed corn planting, and may create extra plant stressors as the growing season progresses. Compared to last year, producers in Canada are relieved to be seeing a better growing season with less extreme weather. To organise mycotoxin testing of your grains or forages over the coming months, feel free to contact your local Alltech representative who will be happy to help.
Mycotoxins and Poultry Explainer
Mycotoxins can negatively impact the health of livestock, fundamentally effecting your bottom line.
Ingestion of mycotoxins can have several side effects such as:
Reduce gut health
Reduce growth rates
Reduce output
Compromise immunity
Damage internal organs
Learn more about the mycotoxin impact on Poultry and how Alltech is working to effectively manage the challenge, with our explainer video below.
Identify the mycotoxin risk in your region
In the recent update of the website homepage, we added a brand new interactive map which allows you to identify the mycotoxin risk in ingredients and finished feeds that have been tested in different regions globally, based on the latest mycotoxin test results from Alltech RAPIREAD™ and Alltech 37+® Click on the map above to learn more about the mycotoxin risk in your region.

Instability and the Green Deal: What does it mean for European crop producers?
The instability from the conflict in Ukraine has dramatically shifted the thinking around the European Green Deal and the potential need to revisit some of the environmental reforms contained in this wide-ranging sustainable strategy.
Managing Mycotoxins at the Aqua Feed Mill | Ben Lamberigts
The reliance on marine-based ingredients has been problematic for the aquaculture feed industry for many years. The industry still has some ways to go in producing a fish meal-free diet across all species, but R&D developments in this area have highlighted that fish do not require fishmeal to grow and perform optimally.
Alltech ONE Conference Round Up | Martin Minchin & Dr. Radka Borutova
After two years of being hosted as online events, both the World Mycotoxin Forum and the Alltech ONE Conference returned to in-person formats in May, with attendees excited to travel and meet again outside of the virtual world.
Dr. Max Hawkins, Global Technical Support & Risk Assessment
"Growing up on a grain and livestock farm in the Midwest is where my interest in the livestock industry began. Working with farrow to finish swine, beef cow calf herd, feedlot cattle and commercial and purebred sheep provided my classroom and laboratory. Livestock gave me a unique opportunity to travel the U.S. to experience the geographical differences in livestock production and management and I still look forward to traveling to work with different producers and different species today.
My education centered in livestock with a MS working with feeder cattle and projecting feedlot outcome, while my Ph.D. investigated osteochondrosis impact on swine growth physiology. I then taught livestock production and management and managed university livestock herds and flocks at Morehead State University and then at California Polytechnic State University. Coaching livestock judging and evaluation teams was a large part of my teaching career and working with livestock producers and developing student’s livestock abilities was extremely rewarding.
My career then entered in the nutrition and feed industry working mostly with swine. However, I was often called upon to work with many different species and my background and experiences proved valuable. It was during these years that I began to become aware of mycotoxins and the impact that they can have on livestock production and health. When given the opportunity to join Alltech, a leader in the industry for mycotoxin work and remediation, the decision was easy. I have the opportunity everyday to work with great colleagues and producers on a global basis to solve issues for more efficient livestock production.
I enjoy home life and travel with my wife Nancy, and spending time with daughters, son-in-laws and grandchildren."
